Baghdad blocks Syria detainee transfer
In response to Syria's request to hand over four thousand Syrian detainees suspected of belonging to the "ISIS" organization, Iraq refused. Iraq confirmed that those detainees whose responsibility for crimes committed within Iraqi territory is established will be prosecuted in Iraq. Prior to that, Iraq repatriated about 50 detainees to Syria after verifying that they were not members of the organization. However, approximately 400 Syrian detainees are still held in Iraq, believed to be prominent members of "ISIS." Baghdad, Syria, and the United States are facing disagreements over the trial procedures for these detainees, with the possibility of transferring some of them later to their home countries to complete sentencing.
