Palestinian President delays elections to 2027

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has decided to postpone the legislative elections originally scheduled for November 28, 2026, to a new date on September 11, 2027. This decision was made based on a resolution by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, with the aim of opening comprehensive national dialogue to strengthen national unity and address the challenges hindering their conduct, particularly due to Israeli procedures, settlement expansion, and ongoing assaults in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza. The postponement seeks to ensure that elections are free and fair, encompassing all Palestinians, and to create the appropriate conditions for their occurrence. Emphasis is placed on preparing the necessary political and security environment, completing arrangements related to deploying international forces, and supporting reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip.
