Tangro fires raise pollution concerns in Sulaymaniyah
The renewed fires at the garbage dump inTangro area in Sulaymaniyah Province raise concerns of an environmental disaster, especially given the pollution of the Tangro River, which receives about a thousand tons of waste daily, with contamination spreading to other regions of Iraq. The area has experienced several fires since October 2026, with various efforts employed to extinguish them, including the use of soil and heavy machinery. These fires are part of a broader problem related to waste disposal and management, leading to the deterioration of health and environmental conditions. There are warnings about the dangers of the intersection between water and air pollution and its impact on nearby residential and industrial areas. The Tangro River issue is among the major challenges requiring local and international government cooperation to mitigate its risks.
