Maintaining the illusion: Friendly insects

The emergence of the bud mite, an endangered species, in the Sydney region has become an unusual phenomenon. This is particularly notable after reports indicated a dramatic decline of 99.5% between 2017 and 2019 due to drought and habitat destruction. As a result, experts have warned residents against using pesticides to protect the species. Despite their current low numbers, an increase in their population is considered a positive sign of recovery and a move toward restoring ecological balance, as they play a vital role in the environment by supporting local animals such as the dwarf wallaby. The insect uses stars and the Earth's magnetic field as navigation tools and migrates seasonally between its breeding grounds within Australia. It also serves as a primary protein source for threatened animals like small mammals and has traditionally been a food source for Indigenous Australians. Officially classified as an endangered species, scientists emphasize the importance of conserving it due to its ecological role. Its disappearance could lead to disruptions in the overall environmental balance.
