Iraq closes 522 illegal car washes in 2026

The article focused on the efforts of Iraqi authorities to improve water management through inspection campaigns targeting unlicensed car wash centers in Baghdad and the provinces since the beginning of 2026. These campaigns resulted in the filing of 190 legal cases and the closure of 522 stations that violated environmental regulations, aiming to reduce the wastage of drinking water, limit pollution of sewage networks, and ease pressure on infrastructure. Automatic car wash stations that use modern techniques and operate according to environmental standards were excluded from the campaign, while excessive and haphazard activities are considered among the causes of water threats and environmental degradation in residential areas.
