Basra Tomatoes Sell for 3,000 Dinars
The stoppage of truck entry through the Al-Shalamja border crossing for the past five days has caused financial losses and affected the availability of vegetables in Basra markets, especially the rise in the price of tomatoes, which has reached around 3,000 dinars per kilogram, due to the closure of the crossing to imported shipments from Iran. Some believe that the market is receiving its goods through unofficial routes via the Kurdistan Region to bypass restrictions, while farmers explain that import restrictions are intended to protect local producers. However, these measures are insufficient to meet demand, especially during the harvest seasons in Kurdistan and for raisins, as the Ministry of Agriculture lacks a clear plan to regulate the import process and determine quantities in a way that balances the protection of farmers with providing affordable prices for consumers.
