Living costs threaten Basra residents
The Human Rights Office in Basra warned of serious negative effects resulting from fluctuations in the US dollar exchange rate and the closure of border crossings. More than 70% of the population are now at risk of food insecurity. The office emphasized that the rising exchange rate has led to increases in the prices of basic goods, especially food and medicine, along with rising costs for services such as electricity and water, as well as fees for death-related transactions. Additionally, the closure of border crossings has contributed to higher prices for staple commodities. The office called on the government to take urgent measures to protect food security and stabilize the pharmaceutical and food sectors to prevent the deterioration of living conditions for impoverished groups.
