Beaches Closed Due to Pollution

The article examines the deteriorating condition of Lebanese beaches due to environmental pollution. A 2026 report by the National Center for Marine Sciences indicated that 68% of beaches are unfit for swimming, with 12 beaches classified as heavily polluted. Human factors such as unplanned urban growth, untreated wastewater discharge, and industrial pollution are contributing to the decline in water quality and damage to the marine environment, which threaten public health and the tourism economy. Experts emphasize the need to develop marine protected areas networks and implement integrated management of coastal zones, alongside eradicating corruption and enforcing environmental protection laws, to preserve Lebanese beaches and ensure their sustainability.
