A Japanese study has found that an antioxidant molecule known as LASSS may help preserve the muscle's ability to repair itself with age by protecting a key protein called Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF). This protein, responsible for activating muscle stem cells for tissue regeneration, undergoes a chemical change called nitration as we age, which weakens its effectiveness. Experiments showed that LASSS reduces nitration and enhances the protein’s binding to receptors that activate muscle repair. This could potentially contribute to treating muscle wasting in the elderly or patients with limited mobility. However, the studies are still preliminary and require further research to confirm its effectiveness in humans.
