Spain seizes large migrant smuggling network

Spanish police announced the dismantling of one of the largest human smuggling networks across the Mediterranean Sea, arresting 78 individuals and seizing 18 speedboats valued at over six million dollars. The network used boats to dangerously transfer migrants from Spain to Algeria and then return them heavily loaded with drugs, resulting in more than 64 smuggling operations that transported over 2,000 people for approximately 28 million dollars. The smuggling activities were highly risky, with passengers tightly bound in rough seas, and some vessels carrying as many as 50 migrants, with fees reaching up to $14,000 per person. This effort was carried out in collaboration with Europol and police forces from France, Portugal, and Poland.
