A recent study revealed that the hormone corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), associated with stress, plays an unexpected role in brain recovery after injuries. Researchers found that precursor cells responsible for producing myelin—the insulating substance surrounding nerves—release this hormone near damaged areas, helping to regulate cell maturation and the rebuilding of the nerve sheath. The results showed that about one-third of the precursor cells begin producing CRH within hours of injury, with production decreasing after three days, indicating its role in the early stages of the recovery process. Experiments also demonstrated that the CRH and CRHR1 system plays a part in myelin growth during brain development, highlighting the significance of this mechanism in recovery and in stress-related diseases such as multiple sclerosis and depression.
