Greece News: Skyros Forest Fire Continues

Greek firefighting crews continue their efforts to control a forest fire on the island of Skilous in the Aegean Sea. The fire, which broke out in the Atsitsa area and spread due to strong winds, has led to the evacuation of residents from nearby regions. About 11 aircraft and helicopters, along with approximately 100 firefighters and reinforcements from neighboring areas, are participating in the effort, aided by heavy machinery used to create firebreaks in rugged terrain. Weather forecasts predict improvement with a decrease in wind speed. These fires are part of a prolonged heatwave in Greece, during which 34 fires have broken out in 24 hours, resulting in the deaths of five firefighters. Since the start of summer, around 20,000 hectares of forests and agricultural land have been damaged, attributed to climate change.
