Iraqi Deputy Gets 7 Years for Big Crime

The Iraqi Court of Cassation for Anti-Corruption Crimes sentenced Member of Parliament Ashwaq Salem Hassan to seven years in prison after finding her guilty of the crime of illicit enrichment. The court also ordered her to reimburse approximately 2.1 billion Iraqi dinars and 2.9 million dollars, in addition to imposing a fine equal to the amount of illicit gains, bringing the total amount to be paid to about 11.95 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately 9.13 million dollars). Additionally, her movable and immovable assets were seized. The court affirmed the Authority of Integrity's right to seek compensation for damages after the ruling becomes final. In a separate case, the court sentenced her to three years in prison for withholding information on her financial disclosure form, and decided to apply the harsher penalty, with the seizure of her assets remaining in place.
