What is America missing in Lebanon policy
The article discusses the American hesitation in taking clear steps to restrict weapons in Lebanon, particularly regarding Hezbollah, despite ongoing American pressure on the Lebanese government and the army. Politicians believe that this hesitation reflects the entanglement of Lebanese state decisions and its slow pace in making decisive actions, driven by a fear of placing responsibility on Hezbollah for any escalation, as well as external pressures to safeguard regional interests. The article also notes that the United States continues to deal with Lebanon based on its bets on the regional balance of power, without fully recognizing how fragile the Lebanese political landscape is and how easily it can fracture at any moment. This fragility hinders the implementation of a long-term strategy to support the Lebanese state and strengthen its control over its weapons, especially amid the economic and security challenges Lebanon faces.
