Federation as a Democratic System
The article addressed the topic of federalism as a governance concept that promotes human rights and justice within pluralistic societies. It focused on the Lebanese case as a vivid example, where the Lebanese pluralistic system faces numerous structural challenges and fundamental ailments, including sharp sectarian divisions, institutional stagnation, an uneven distribution of power, and external interventions. The study indicates that if the federal system is founded on principles of respect for human rights, dialogue, and acceptance of differences, it can form a political ontology that guarantees human dignity and enhances coexistence and cooperation among diverse groups. It emphasizes that the success of federalism requires a culture of respect for pluralism, a broad democratic ceiling, and effective coordination mechanisms. Conversely, the authoritarian system undermines these principles by imposing dominance and erasing diversity, thereby threatening human rights and national identity.
