Spain elderly woman María Carmen Abascal passes away

Marie Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman from Madrid, who became a symbol of Spain's housing crisis after being evicted from her lifelong home on September 23rd due to a sharp rent increase by the owning real estate company, has passed away. Her eviction sparked widespread protests across the country, including demonstrations in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square, which pressured the leftist government to adopt urgent measures to address the crisis, such as imposing restrictions on evictions and automatically extending rental contracts. Although an agreement was reached with the company that helped her return to her home, her case sparked a national and political debate about the housing crisis, which has become a key issue ahead of the snap elections scheduled for November 29th.
