Trump sanctions ICC urges halt or end
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, in an escalatory move against the judicial institution, just hours after one of its former judges was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the United States will not allow the court to prosecute Americans, clarifying that the sanctions include a ban on dealings with the court and the cutting of its resources, with a threat to eliminate its presence if it refuses to cease its threats. On the other hand, the deputy attorney general of the court stated that these sanctions will not affect the court's work and that investigations and prosecutions will continue, despite criticism and a reaffirmation of judicial independence. These measures represent one of the most significant escalations between Washington and the court, including restrictions on companies dealing with the court, and they address previous disagreements over arrest warrants against Israeli officials and investigations into the conduct of American soldiers.
