Delhi lockdown as protesters detained

Indian security forces detained over two thousand protesters, including the leader of the youth movement "Kukuch," in New Delhi and other cities. They also prevented opposition groups from demonstrating against the recent voter registration list amendments, which are accused of unfairly favoring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Tight security measures were enforced, including cutting internet services and shutting down metro stations and markets, in an attempt to prevent a planned protest at Jantar Mantar square. The UN Human Rights Office expressed concern over the mass arrests and called for ensuring the right to peaceful assembly, while the Indian mission to the United Nations described these criticisms as unfounded interference in India’s internal affairs.
