Washington ties South rebuild to Hezbollah disarmament
The U.S. State Department has confirmed that Washington continues its dialogue with Lebanon and Israel to advance negotiations, with a focus on the condition of disarming Hezbollah as a precondition for rebuilding southern Lebanon and resettling displaced persons. The department's spokesperson explained that the United States is working with partners in the Gulf and Europe to raise billions of dollars for reconstructing the affected areas, emphasizing that Hezbollah's continued arming hinders regional stability. The spokesperson also indicated progress in the talks between Lebanon and Israel, mentioning that Washington is working to implement understandings related to Israel's withdrawal and the verification measures for their execution. They stressed that disarming Hezbollah remains a fundamental condition for peace and stability, and that Lebanese military support will continue without a specific end date. The statements suggest that Washington links reconstruction efforts to Hezbollah's disarmament and emphasizes ongoing mediation, despite an unclear timetable for Israel's full withdrawal.
