Student on death row with leaked recording

An Iranian court has issued a death sentence against 23-year-old student Nargess Amini on charges of "religious insult," based on a social media post. This case has sparked human rights criticisms concerning the increasing use of capital punishment for digital expressions in Iran. She remains detained in Mashhad Prison, facing a non-final sentence that can be appealed. From within the prison, she reaffirmed her innocence and appealed to international organizations to intervene. The verdict is based on Article 262 of the Iranian Penal Code, which stipulates the death penalty for offenses involving insult to the Prophet Muhammad or other sacred religious figures.
