Akkar's Gold: from Mountains to Decline

Apple season in Akkar, Lebanon, is facing a severe glut crisis, despite the abundance of production, which reaches 17,000 tons annually from an area of approximately 25,000 dunams. Farmers are struggling because the local market cannot absorb the surplus, and electricity outages and limited diesel supplies make storing apples difficult, whether to wait for better prices or to export. Experts are calling on the government to intervene quickly by establishing mechanisms for fair pricing and purchasing a portion of the harvest at reasonable rates, ensuring the livelihoods of thousands and preventing an economic and social catastrophe in the region.
