US-led military-civilian mission differs from UNIFIL
The European Union and France are working to establish a military and civilian support mission in Lebanon, aimed at providing training and assistance to Lebanese security and military forces to strengthen their security capabilities, particularly in the areas of combating smuggling and improving the capabilities of the armed forces and police, without deploying a direct combat force. This initiative is part of an effort by European countries to enhance the state’s control over Lebanese territory, with a focus on supporting the army and internal security forces. Meanwhile, negotiations to define a new mission framework to replace UNIFIL are still on hold, with the goal of weakening Hezbollah’s armed capabilities and strengthening the security authorities’ authority within the state.
