Japan PM denies espionage claims

Prime Minister Sanae Takaitchi of Japan stated that her country is not involved in espionage activities after a Japanese journalist was detained in Russia on accusations of spying for Japan. She noted that the government has no evidence to support these claims and is focused on protecting its citizens. The remarks came in response to Russian allegations claiming that Yuki Imai, a journalist from the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, was working to obtain Russian defense information. This led Japan to summon the Russian ambassador and call on Moscow to treat him fairly. Details regarding the accusations have not been disclosed yet. The incident has been met with Japanese outrage, while the Russian Federal Security Service confirmed his detention near the Sakhalin Islands, asserting that he was espionaging on behalf of Japan.
