UNIFIL mission activated Lebanon calls for Blue Line oversight

Summary of the article: The United Nations Security Council is currently discussing the future of the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon. The current proposals include establishing a new monitoring mission, extending the existing one, or withdrawing while enhancing the capabilities of the Lebanese Army. The United States is currently firm and insists on not modifying the mandates of the international force, while Lebanon requests a monitoring mission with clear powers to oversee the Blue Line and violations, continuing coordination with the Israeli occupation forces. The options on the table range from improving monitoring levels and maintaining international presence, but these options face significant challenges, especially given Washington’s support for a potential withdrawal. Israel, on the other hand, rejects the continued presence of UNIFIL and considers it linked to the presence of Hezbollah.
