Switzerland's Neutrality Policy

The Swiss People's Initiative "Maintaining Swiss Neutrality," which was put to a vote in late September and was rejected by political authorities, sheds light on its effort to amend the way Switzerland has traditionally applied its neutrality policy for the past 175 years. The initiative includes a proposal to prohibit the imposition of sanctions on warring countries and calls for non-participation in military alliances such as NATO, with the aim of preserving the country's independence and avoiding a reduction in international cooperation. It emphasizes using neutrality as a means to prevent and resolve conflicts. The political debate has revealed a division between opponents who advocate for greater flexibility in neutral policy and supporters who believe the initiative reinforces Switzerland's identity rooted in peace and security.
