UN absence in South Lebanon poses risk

An high-ranking international source revealed that the upcoming phase in South Lebanon will be decisive regarding the presence of international forces, especially with the approaching end of the UNIFIL mission and ongoing negotiations at the Security Council. There are concerns that the absence of the United Nations in monitoring the Blue Line could lead to escalation, as Lebanese people fear that Israel might exploit the lack of international observers to continue attacks and incursions into Lebanese territory without oversight or neutral reporting. Lebanese officials, including the President, Prime Minister, and Army Commander, emphasize the necessity of maintaining international presence to monitor violations and provide support. Meanwhile, the United States and Europe are considering various options to compensate for UNIFIL's absence, with warnings that serious incidents could occur in the absence of an independent body to help prevent escalation.
