Alberta votes on potential secession amid trade tensions

The Canadian province of Alberta, which possesses the world's largest proven oil reserves, conducted a non-binding referendum on secession from Canada. The focus was on the possibility of a subsequent binding referendum if a majority voted in favor. Although less than a quarter of the population supports independence, the vote aims to increase political pressure on the federal government, especially amid tensions regarding Ottawa's energy policies and protests by oil industry workers. This vote is considered part of a political escalation reflecting anger at governmental policies and comes within a context of deteriorating relations between the province and the central government. The results are expected to be announced in the morning hours after more than 1.4 million out of 3.1 million eligible voters cast their ballots in advance, a move that could potentially spark a national crisis in the future.
