South Lebanon Tensions Among Forces
The article clarifies the security and sovereignty situation in South Lebanon, where the region faces challenges related to the control of Lebanese forces, Hezbollah, and the ongoing Israeli military presence. Although the state holds legal sovereignty, the Lebanese army’s ability to enforce its control is affected by weapons outside state institutions and the persistent Israeli presence. The UNIFIL mission is expected to conclude on December 31, 2026, with a trend toward gradual withdrawal. However, the challenge lies in ensuring stability without creating a security vacuum, which requires an actual Israeli withdrawal, enabling the Lebanese army to exercise its authority, addressing the issue of weapons outside the state, and providing guarantees for civilians to return to their areas safely. The continued presence of Hezbollah and the existence of arms outside state control remain factors hindering the full restoration of sovereignty. Achieving lasting stability necessitates a comprehensive political and security process.
