Peru allocates 18 billion soles for El Niño response

Peru's President Keiko Fujimori announced that the government will allocate 18 billion soles (approximately 5.2 million USD) for the upcoming year to address the giant "El Niño" phenomenon, which is expected to peak next December. This move comes amid severe climatic repercussions, as wildfires linked to the phenomenon have resulted in 12 deaths and the displacement of hundreds since June, with 457 forest fires recorded, especially in the Cusco region near Machu Picchu. The government affirms that the spending plan aims to mitigate the impact of the phenomenon, which raises Pacific Ocean temperatures and alters weather patterns, despite rising fuel prices. It also seeks to strengthen the country's efforts to face the increasing climate challenges.
