The English Football Association plans to implement a new system starting from the upcoming season to limit teams from exploiting tactical stoppages caused by goalkeepers feigning injury to halt play. The system stipulates that if a goalkeeper falls to the ground for treatment on the pitch, a temporary penalty will be imposed on his team by removing one of its players for one minute, with a 10-second timer for the coach to choose, and if no selection is made, the player will be forcibly required to leave. Genuine injury cases, such as severe collisions, bleeding, or concussions, are exempted from this rule. This measure comes in response to criticism, particularly regarding instances where players pretend to be injured to avoid engaging in play or to disrupt the game, with last season featuring controversial cases, most notably Arsenal’s goalkeeper being injured three times in a single match, and other goalkeepers being similarly exploited. Although the UEFA Committee previously rejected adopting the new rules, national associations will have the opportunity to test the system potentially during the English League Cup match on August 1.
