South Korea reexamines athlete military exemptions

The South Korean government announced that it will review the military exemption system granted to athletes, following criticism sparked by celebrations of the national team players after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games. These celebrations included statements from team captain Lee Gihyuk expressing his unwillingness to serve in the military. In South Korea, men are required to perform military service lasting between 18 and 21 months before the age of 28. However, gold medalists at the Asian Games and the Olympics are exempted from service with a short training period of less than a month. The review will include reducing these privileges, especially after criticism of the system's perceived unfairness. More than 80% of exemptions at the Asian Games were granted in recent years, with 44 individuals benefiting, most of whom participated in team sports like football and baseball. This has led to feelings of injustice among young people.
