South Korea Considers Athletic Exemption Review

The South Korean government plans to reduce the exemption system for elite athletes' military service following widespread criticism of football players who won gold at the Asian Games in Japan and celebrated their exemption. Typically, physically capable males are required to perform military service lasting between 18 months and two years before turning 28, but gold medalists at the Olympics or Asian Games are granted exemptions after a short military training. After the football team won the gold medal, controversy arose over remarks made by player Lee G-young-hyuk and celebrations by some players that included military symbols, prompting the Sports Minister and Defense Minister to call for tightening regulations and gradually reducing exemptions. Officials aim to phase out the exemption system altogether, and this issue is sensitive, as star athletes like Son Heung-min have traditionally avoided commenting on military exemptions.
