FIFA explains position on DRC goalkeeper issues

The International Football Federation (FIFA) denied the existence of any issue regarding the eligibility of Congo Democratic Republic goalkeeper Lionel Mabidi to participate in the 2026 World Cup matches, including the game against Jamaica and subsequent qualifiers. FIFA also confirmed that Mabidi’s documents were complete and that he was eligible to play, after media reports and ongoing questions about his eligibility before the tournament. Mabidi (33 years old), born in France and who previously played for French youth national teams before choosing to play for Congo, participated in all of his national team’s matches at the World Cup, after FIFA granted permission for him to do so.
