Majority of clubs face financial losses

An official report revealed that 94% of first division football clubs in England recorded losses during the 2025-2026 season, despite generating revenues of approximately £9 billion (around $11.88 billion). The report confirmed that the majority of these clubs rely heavily on financial support from their owners, with most unable to survive more than 90 days without additional funding, while 29% would only last 30 days before financial collapse. The Independent Football Regulator in England called for stricter oversight of clubs’ financial spending and the implementation of emergency plans to address financial risks, alongside reforms in revenue distribution mechanisms and improvements in governance management. While the Premier League supports the regulator’s report and the reduction of excessive reliance on external funding, the regulator’s head emphasized that he has not faced political pressure regarding the Manchester City club, which is currently under financial investigation.
