UEFA omits Spanish referees from 54 matches

The European Europa League and European Football institutions have excluded Spanish referees from officiating matches this week, as no Spanish referee has been appointed to oversee matches in the Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League. This comes amid widespread controversy over the decline in the quality of Spanish refereeing, due to recent crises in La Liga, such as the Vinicius Jr. incident and fan protests against refereeing decisions. The participation of Spanish referees is limited to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, with three elite-level referees from the European Union not assigned to any matches this week, and one first-category referee also absent. Some analysts link this absence to the influence of recent controversies on the reputation of Spanish refereeing, although the European Union has not issued any official statement regarding this matter.
