Cannavaro says he didn't expect to win Ballon d'Or

Former Italian football star Fabio Cannavaro revealed that he did not expect to win the Ballon d'Or in 2006, despite leading the Italian national team to victory in the World Cup in Germany and being awarded the prize. He noted that Zinedine Zidane was the most favored to win, even though he was sent off in the World Cup final. Cannavaro explained that many stars delivered outstanding performances during that period, and Zidane was the most likely to win the award; however, Cannavaro received it in recognition of his role in Italy's World Cup triumph.
