Microsoft unveils Xbox game digitalization

Microsoft has launched a "Disc-to-Digital" feature that allows users to convert physical Xbox game discs into digital downloads that can be played without needing the physical disc inside the console. The feature is now rolling out to all Xbox Series X and Series S users after limited testing. It enables the creation of a digital license from the physical copy, permitting the game to be played across devices and to be compatible with services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and mobile gaming. This feature does not create a permanent standalone copy; the license is lost if the disc is sold or lent out, relying solely on the availability of the game via the digital license. It is mainly used to preserve older games that have been removed from digital stores. Currently supporting more than 1,500 games, the feature continues to see increased support from companies, raising questions about the concept of digital content ownership.
