Key milestones from transistors to ChatGPT

Transistors have become the foundation of modern computing, evolving from large mechanical components based on vacuum tubes to precise electronic units that can be miniaturized and integrated into small chips. Reducing the size of transistors is essential to increasing their density on a chip, which in turn supports the development of more powerful processors with higher performance—especially with advanced technologies such as FinFET, gate-all-around, and nanowire transistors. With technological progress, the focus now shifts toward 2-nanometer processes to achieve gains in density, performance, and energy efficiency, while facing challenges related to heat and energy caused by increased transistor density. Additionally, precise manufacturing control and cooling methods—such as liquid cooling—have become critical to ensuring optimal performance. The future of computing, particularly with artificial intelligence, depends on the semiconductor industry's ability to push transistor miniaturization to new limits to deliver greater computational power with higher efficiency.
