Electronic attack disrupts French stores

Hundreds of major stores in France were subjected to a cyber attack targeting their refrigeration systems, which caused internal temperatures in refrigerators and freezers to rise and led to the spoilage of large quantities of fresh and frozen products. The control system for refrigeration, manufactured by Danfoss and used in chains such as Intermarché and Carrefour, was targeted through remote manipulation of its settings, resulting in temperature increases up to 50 degrees Celsius in some cases. The incident affected around 300 stores, with potential losses amounting to tens of millions of euros. It was described as a serious threat to food security, and it also revealed the risks associated with using outdated, unpatched systems connected to the Internet, highlighting the need to strengthen the cybersecurity infrastructure of food industry entities.
