AI data limits may cost Germany $173B

A study by the German Ifo Institute indicates that tightening restrictions on access to AI training data could cause economic losses estimated at around $173 billion annually for Germany. This restriction is expected to limit the gains from generative AI, which could reach $492 billion per year by 2034, but would decrease to approximately $339 billion after the restrictions. The researchers called for maintaining regulatory exemptions that allow the use of commercial data, along with establishing transparent and balanced rules to foster innovation while minimizing risks.
