Foldable iPhone's costly screen repair before launch

Foldable phones face significant challenges related to the durability of the screen and hinge due to frequent use, especially given the high repair costs. Reports indicate that fixing the internal screen of a foldable iPhone can cost up to $999, which is nearly half the phone's price of $1,999. Repairing other damages can cost over $1,400. The design of foldable screens requires flexible layers that can withstand repeated bending, along with a hinge that can develop issues such as wear, squeaks after multiple cycles, and exposure to dust and moisture affecting both the hinge and the sensitive layers. Apple aims to reduce maintenance costs through AppleCare+ service, which lowers the cost to repair the internal screen to $99; however, this is not free and requires a monthly or annual subscription. Overall, the high repair costs and delays in service may influence consumer purchasing decisions and erode confidence in foldable phones.
