Implications of targeting submarine cables

The article discusses the impact of Iran's threat to cut underwater cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which carry approximately 80% of the world's internet traffic, on the Arab region and beyond. The report explains that severing these cables, especially those located in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, could lead to widespread internet outages in Gulf countries, Europe, and East Asia, with direct effects on data center services and vital applications such as transportation, delivery, and social media. It could also disrupt major companies' services like Amazon, Microsoft, and Huawei. Although alternatives like satellite internet exist, the shutdown of submarine cables would cause slowed service speeds and halt many applications, posing significant risks to daily life and digital infrastructure in the region. Furthermore, it threatens the stability of global networks if Iran follows through with its threats.
