Bizerte Highlights Alzheimer's Day Challenges
The Regional Health Directorate, in coordination with the Neurology Network and the "Alzheimer Tunisia" Association, organized an awareness day on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Disease Day in Bizerte, with the aim of educating the community about the challenges of the disease and its impact on patients and their families. The report indicates that there are approximately 70,000 Alzheimer's patients in Tunisia, despite the absence of an official registry for cases. It is believed that globally, the number of affected individuals will reach around 55.1 million by 2025, with an expected rise to approximately 139 million, especially among the elderly. The disease progresses through five stages, starting with no visible symptoms and advancing to a complete loss of communication and self-care abilities. It leads to disturbances in memory, thinking, and behavior. Currently, there is no effective treatment, which increases the challenges faced by families and healthcare services. Experts emphasize the importance of maintaining patients' routines and providing comprehensive psychological and medical support to facilitate management of the condition until a comprehensive cure is found in the future.
