Sousse Watercuts Lead to Abandoned Fields
The Shatt Maryam area within the Akkouda district was formerly a successful model of irrigated agriculture, providing various regions with different types of vegetables and fruits. Farmers in the area achieved significant successes with the support of the state. However, the situation has deteriorated greatly since 2023 due to the disruption of water supplies from Nabehana to the Shatt Maryam and Al-Fuqaa regions. Despite an allocation of 70,000 dinars for network rehabilitation, work stopped after just one month, leading to equipment damage and theft. Reports also revealed management flaws within the water association, a lack of financial reports since 2017, and unauthorized construction on water canal routes. These issues deprived farmers of drinking water, halted agricultural activities, increased forced unemployment in the area, and caused a sharp decline in the agricultural sector. A comprehensive investigation has been called for to find solutions to restore the farms to their previous standing.
