Second US state designates Eid as holiday

The governor of the U.S. state of California, Gavin Newsom, officially signed legislation recognizing two Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as official holidays in the state. This makes California the second state in the United States to officially recognize these holidays, after Washington. The law allows public schools and colleges to close on these days and grants state employees the right to celebrate them, although schools and businesses are not required to close, and courts will remain open. This move is part of efforts to promote religious freedoms, as Newsom has previously signed laws protecting other religious observances such as Jewish holidays, along with legislation allowing students to have excused absences for religious holidays.
