A joint team of researchers and students from the National Heritage Institute and the University of Sassari in Italy successfully uncovered archaeological features dating back to the Roman era at the site of "Hinshir al-Matariya" in the Jendouba governorate of Tunisia. The excavation, which lasted from September 6 to October 4, 2026, focused on two main sections of the ancient city "Numluli": the first being the "Capitoline Temple," built since 170 AD, where parts of the square's mosaics, a fountain, and various components of the temple were uncovered. The second site is a 5th-century Vandal church that includes tombs, different spaces, and unique mosaic panels, all reflecting the lifestyle of that period. The project aims to study and promote Roman heritage and is part of an international cooperation agreement between the institute and the university.
