Sfax reports 170 accidents this year due to speeding

Sfax reports 170 accidents this year due to speeding

Since the beginning of the year until October 8, 2026, the Sfax Governorate recorded 170 traffic accidents, representing a 33.85% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, which documented 257 accidents. These accidents resulted in 72 fatalities and 227 injuries, placing the governorate in seventh position nationwide in terms of the number of accidents and fourth in terms of fatalities, accounting for 6.85% of the total national deaths. Speeding was the leading cause of accidents, responsible for 46 incidents, followed by inattentiveness and forgetfulness with 30 incidents, and failure to give way with 18 incidents. It is worth noting that light vehicles were the most involved in accidents, with 108 cases, followed by motorcycles with 89 incidents. These accidents resulted in 37 deaths each for light vehicles and motorcycles, and 22 deaths involving trucks. Local authorities are implementing immediate measures such as reducing speed limits, repairing roads, and improving lighting to mitigate risks. However, despite the decline in the number of accidents, the rise in fatalities continues, highlighting the need for additional measures to reduce road traffic deaths.
