Beginning of olive harvest in Medenine

The olive harvesting season in the Medenine region began today, Thursday, October 15, marking an early start by two weeks compared to last year. This shift is due to the significant impact of the record heatwave on the trees and the ripening of the fruits. The harvest is expected to yield around 30,000 tons of olives, from which approximately 6,000 tons of oil will be extracted, coming from irrigated groves accounting for 55% and rain-fed groves making up 45%. Gathering the harvest requires about 4,445 workers over a period of three months, and processing it involves 280 workers over 90 days, with 35 oil presses operating at a production capacity of up to 335 tons per batch. A funding of approximately 263,000 Tunisian dinars has been allocated to support the harvest season. Additionally, the Regional Oil Center in Zarzis purchased 1,300 tons of oil from small-scale farmers. The olive oil sector is one of the key economic sectors in the area, with over 5 million olive trees spread across more than 211,000 hectares.
