Houtiyat Urges Tunas Fishing System Review
The organization "Houtiyat" has called for a review of the anchovy fishing system in Tunisia to ensure the sustainability of the marine stock. This includes measuring biological rest periods, adjusting legal fishing weights, and tightening oversight of violations. They also pointed out that the price of anchovies has risen from widely available products to higher-priced varieties, which hampers some consumers' ability to purchase them. The organization urges an assessment of the appropriateness of setting fishing schedules and weights, taking into account regional differences and biological recurrence conditions, in order to strike a balance between protecting the fishery resources and economic benefit. They emphasize the importance of strict enforcement of laws, combating illegal fishing, and adopting environmentally friendly methods—replacing plastic traps—to ensure the sustainability of marine resources.
