Shamonda virus: origins and human cases
Anatoly Altstein, senior researcher at Russia's Gamaleya Institute of Microbiology, confirmed that diagnosing the first human case of Chimonda virus does not indicate the start of a serious epidemic. The infection was found in France in a patient with severe immunodeficiency, which is a crucial factor making this case exceptional. Scientists have known about the virus since the 1960s; it primarily infects animals used in agriculture and usually causes mild illness with symptoms such as fever, lethargy, and diarrhea, often accompanied by a potential decrease in milk production in affected animals. Experts believe that the infection may have occurred previously without being detected since it did not cause obvious illness. They emphasized that this current case is isolated, and there is no expectation of widespread transmission or a threat to human health or epidemics. It is advised that anyone working with livestock protect themselves from bites of vector insects.
